Shugendo: Ascetic Mountain Practice

Religious philosophy identifying Shinto kami with Buddhist deities or viewing them as mutually complementary. The dominant belief system from the Nara period through Edo era. The Honji-Suijaku doctrine posited Japanese kami as earthly manifestations of Buddhist bodhisattvas and Buddhas.
