Sankaijuku Dance Company

Avant-garde dance art form born in Japan during the 1960s. Created by Tatsumi Hijikata and the Ankoku Butoh movement, continued by artists like Kazuo Ohno. Performers move barefoot with chalk-covered bodies in slow, distorted movements expressing transcendent artistic vision. Butoh has become an influential force in contemporary international dance, performed globally.

Developed by Tatsumi Hijikata in the 1950s, Butoh revolutionized Japanese contemporary dance. Fusing classical Japanese dance with avant-garde art, it established a unique aesthetic exploring the body's darker dimensions. Its global influence established Butoh as a major contemporary dance genre worldwide.

A butoh company founded in 1975, led by choreographer Ōno Yoshito. It inherits butoh philosophy while conducting international performances. With credits including performances at Lincoln Center and other world stages, Sankai Juku has been instrumental in establishing butoh as a globally recognized art form.
