Ise Shrine Pilgrimage and Monzen Town Culture

A network of pilgrimage routes leading to Kumano Sanzan (three Kumano shrines) in the Kii Peninsula. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 as 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' Multiple routes including Nakahechi, Ohechi, and Kohechi have been traveled by ascetics and believers for centuries as paths of spiritual practice and faith, representing a historically significant pilgrimage network.

Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture is famous for the legend of all Japanese deities gathering there during the Kannazuki (October) festival. Central to marriage blessing traditions, pilgrims pray for good relationships. Pilgrimage during the Kamiari Festival (when deities are believed present) is particularly significant. This religious heritage relates to ancient Izumo kingdom legends, with its main building representing Japan's oldest shrine architectural style. Attracting approximately 2.5 million annual visitors, it epitomizes Japanese faith culture.

Pilgrimage to Ise Shrine in Ise, Mie Prefecture, the pinnacle of Shinto faith. It features unique pilgrimage culture centered on Shikinen Sengu (architectural relocation every 20 years). Since the Edo period attracting popular devotion, it welcomes over 8 million visitors annually.
