Ise Shrine Pilgrimage Culture

A pilgrimage tradition at Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture during the Kamiari Festival (10th lunar month), when eight million deities nationwide are said to converge at Izumo. Visiting during this period holds special spiritual significance. This pilgrimage culture represents a fusion of devotion to Okuninushi (deity of good marriages) and unique seasonal faith traditions.

Traditional culture of post-shrine towns developed to serve Ise Grand Shrine pilgrims. Particularly prosperous during the Edo period, these commercial districts densely packed with lodgings, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Oharaimachi and Okage-Yokocho represent prime examples, now preserving and reconstructing Edo-era streetscapes. A unique culture emerged from the interaction between pilgrims and merchants, continuing today.
