Okinawa Wrestling Culture

Okinawa has developed unique martial arts culture since the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Beyond karate-do, diverse combat traditions including Ryukyuan martial arts and Okinawan sumo (Shima sumo) are rooted in the region. These represent important cultural heritage symbolizing Okinawan identity and community cohesion. Currently sustained through school education and regional practices, they embody the spiritual essence of Okinawan culture.

Ehime Prefecture is one of Japan's premier wrestling development centers. Strong high school programs and successful university championships have established nationwide influence.
