Yamabe no Michi Ancient Road Pilgrimage

A network of pilgrimage routes leading to Kumano Sanzan (three Kumano shrines) in the Kii Peninsula. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 as 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' Multiple routes including Nakahechi, Ohechi, and Kohechi have been traveled by ascetics and believers for centuries as paths of spiritual practice and faith, representing a historically significant pilgrimage network.

Sixty-seven post towns flourished along the Nakasendo during the Edo period, connecting Edo and Kyoto.
