Kitano Tenmangu Ume Garden Festival

A cultural phenomenon linking Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century Heian-period aristocrat revered as the deity of learning, with plum blossoms. According to legend, when Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu in disgrace, his beloved plum tree flew after him. This legend transformed plum blossoms into a symbol of Sugawara worship, making them central to plum festivals across Japan's Tenmangu shrines.

A historic plum garden at Kitano Tenmangu in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. Open from early February to mid-March, it features over 1,500 plum trees of 50 varieties across a 2,000-tsubo garden. Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, who loved plum blossoms, it remains one of Kyoto's premier plum viewing destinations.
